The interior, built on a Greek plan, is dark and intimate. Notable works of art include Giovanni Bellini’s St Jerome with Saints Christopher and Augustine, which hangs over the first altar on the right. Influenced by Giorgione, this was probably Bellini’s last painting, created when he was in his eighties.
There is also Sebastiano del Piombo’s St John Chrysostom and Six Saints, which hangs above the high altar. Del Piombo, who was also influenced by Giorgione, is believed by some to have painted the figures of St. John the Baptist and St. Liberal himself.
