Gallerie dell' Accademia

Venice Academy Gallery Museum of Art

Also known as the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia, the Academy Gallery Museum of Art is Venice’s premiere art museum!  This monumental art gallery contains the world’s most complete 13th- to 18th- Century art collections.  These include masterpieces by the Venetian greats who specialized in Byzantine and Gothic art of the Renaissance period such as Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese and more.   These masterful Venetian artists not only shaped the history of Venice art, but European art.

The colossal Accademia Gallery serves as the headquarters for the Confraternity of Our Lady of Charity, which is among the oldest lay fraternities of Venice.  The galleries are contained in what were once a monastery, a church, and the school of Santa Maria della Carità.  The majority of the art collections here were gathered in 1756.

Neptune Offering Gifts to VeniceAlthough it is difficult to pinpoint the most outstanding artworks exhibited within this epic museum, two of them certainly include The Tempest by Bellini, and Feast in the House of Levi by Veronese.  One of our personal favorites is captured here, Tiepolo’s Neptune Offering Gifts to Venice

The Accademia Gallery also hosts many of the 18th-century landscape painters’ works such as Canaletto’s, Bellotto’s and Longhi’s.   Located near the Peggy Guggenheim Art Museum, the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia was difficult not to list as our #1 or #2 picks of incredible Venice museums!  Read another article in this website about Gallery dell’Accademia  here

Getting there:  Located in northern Italy along the south bank of the Grand Canal.  The Gallerie dell’Accademia is right in front of the Accademia water bus landing and down from the Accademia Bridge which crosses over the Grand Canal.  Both were named for their close proximity to the museum.
