Italy has a largely temperate climate with regional variations. In summer, the Northern parts of Italy are warm with occasional rainfall. The central region is somewhat stifled by humidity, and the south scorches under the dry heat. In winter, conditions in Venice are dominated by cold, damp and fog, while temperatures in the south of the country are more favourable, averaging 50-60ºF (10-20ºC).
Located in North-East Italy, Venice has a climate that dramatically changes throughout the year. In winter, it can drop below freezing, whilst in the summer the temperature can soar to 35 ºC. The hottest month is July and the coldest is January. The humidity remains high all year round due to the canals. During winter, the night time drop in temperature causes atmospheric mists to hover over the canals. Also in the autumn and winter months, Venice is susceptible to flooding and this seems to occur almost on a daily basis during November. This is related to the tides in the Venetian lagoon, but it only lasts for a few hours a day. This phenomenon is known as Acqua Alta.
Acqua Alta iregularly occurs in the city of Venice, most commonly during the autumn and spring high tides. It causes flooding of the lowest lying areas of Venice or in more severe cases, up to 96% of the City streets. By official definition, acqua alta occurs when the water level is higher than 90 cm or 35.4 inches above normal sea level.
When a higher than usual tide is expected in the city, sirens are sounded 3-4 hours in advance to warn the public, but they start only if the level expected is going to be above 110 cm. which means 12% of the surface under water.
Spring is one of the best seasons to visit Venice. Tourism is limited and the temperatures are generally favourable.
