The M9 Museum is one of the most modern Venice museums. It attracts visitors with an engaging display and a multimedia approach. The museum's collections focus on the history of the 20th century, presented in a fun and interactive way. Visitors can touch all the exhibits, making it a perfect place for friends and family.

Getting to the museum

The best way to reach the M9 Museum is to take a bus or a train from Piazzale Roma. The fastest way to arrive at the Piazzale Roma is to take a vaporetto, but enthusiastic travellers can also walk. Since Mestre isn't a central location, use our Venice map for navigation.

The museum is open daily except Mondays and offers special opening hours during the holidays. Due to many innovative and exciting installations, reserve at least two hours for the visit.

History and architecture M9 Museum

The M9 Museum is one of those Venice museums worth visiting because of its architecture. Designed by Berlin architects Sauerbruch & Hutton, it is a modern European institution resembling museums in Vienna. The architects also redesigned a former 16th-century convent and a monastery, making Mestre a fresh locale on the Venice map.

Now, the square is home to a few offices and shops. The courtyard is the venue for public performances and various events. The materials used during the construction included wood and concrete, all raw and friendly for the environment. Overall, the museum is very sustainable as it uses energy-producing technologies.

Why you should visit

There are three floors in the museum. The first two are for a permanent display, and the third is for temporary exhibitions and events.

The collection comprises eight sections and includes around 60 multimedia installations. The museum encourages a hands-on approach, offering many touch screens, virtual reality, and 3D representations.

The information presented through the collection comes from over 150 archives and includes audio and video content. The M9 Museum is a fantastic way to pass the time as a family.

Children can enjoy many activities, including games, a massive jukebox, and a Fiat workshop. The collection brings travelers closer to the historical events and scientific discoveries of the 20th century. A cafe and a bookshop are also available for those who'd like to take a break and relax.

Things to do in the area

Mestre, known as the city's suburbs, is a modern area, different from the other Venice neighborhoods. After exploring the M9 Museum, head for some affordable and relaxing shopping at the Le Barche Mall.

Then, take a stroll through Piazza Erminio Ferretto. Around the museum, you'll also find a few less-known Venice churches, frequented mainly by locals.

Those active and adventurous tourists can take a tram or a bus to see San Giuliano Park. It is a lovely green area away from the hustle and bustle of Venetian streets.
