Acqua Alta in Venice
In the autumn and winter months, Venice weather is susceptible to flooding. This phenomenon, known as Acqua Alta, often occurs in November. Acqua Alta directly links to the tides of the Venetian Lagoon. It lasts only a few hours but can create inconveniences, such as flooding in the lower areas of Venice. When Venice floods, the calle (or the squares) also flood, making it difficult to get around the city on foot. By definition, high water occurs when the level is more than 90 cm or 35.4 inches above sea level. When the tide is higher than usual, the city sirens warn the population 3-4 hours in advance. It is best to plan your Venice itinerary with Acqua Alta in mind.
Venice weather in spring, summer, and fall
Spring is one of the best seasons to visit Venice. There are fewer tourists, and the temperatures are pleasant. In spring, it is usually sunny in Venice, with some chances of rain. The days begin to lengthen in May and reach about 10 hours of daylight. Average temperatures for this season are between 12°C and 21°C (53°F and 70°F).
The summer climate in Venice is sunny, warm, and humid. The average summer temperature ranges from 25°C to 31°C (80°F and 90°F). It has reached 40°C (104°F) in recent years, but evenings are often quite comfortable. You can also escape the city heat and visit one of the resorts nearby Venice, such as Jesolo.
Venice's autumn weather is generally pleasant. During this time, you can catch the most gorgeous sunsets. Traveling at the beginning of autumn is best, as it is usually dry. Then, the rainy season starts around mid-November. The average temperature is about 15°C (59°F).
